Cypher Unit – Closer Look

Above are the images are taken from the original report. One thing that we discovered was that this scrambler was very similar to that fitted to the CCM (Combined Cipher Machine) used when fitted to a British TYPEX machine they worked with American SIGABA machines

Above are the images of a Typex Machine with mounting posts needed when a CCM is fitted. Below this is a CCM unit in its travelling box. In addition to the pillars, there is an extra link on the cypher wheel progression mechanism that drives the code wheel on the CCM.

Alan Turing must have had a special relationship with the Americans in being able to have two of these top-secret units for Delilah development purposes. It is almost certain that these units came from America because there are many cypher breaking, American units with the same physical wheel and construction

The M9, above left is the closest to the CCM of any other similar device
